Department of Treasury and Finance

peckvonhartel have been engaged as designer and lead consultant for a new 5640sqm office fit-out for the Department of Treasury and Finance in Melbourne’s CBD. The first of three phases to be implemented has been recently completed including a new public interface and training facility.

The design reinforces and reflects the organisation’s core values of honesty and integrity. The design intent reflects the client’s desire for openness and transparency while resolving requirements for a high level of security.

The design of the reception desk and banquet seating create a visual connection and continuity between primary and secondary public zones. The reception and break out space have been designed to facilitate the gathering of large numbers before and after meetings, training sessions and conferences. The visually striking breakout space makes clever use of complex space created by a floor plate studded with large structural columns.

The training facility has been designed to be flexible and adaptable. Using a system of operable walls, the three training rooms open to facilitate interagency functions and all-staff meetings by incorporating the public break out space and surrounding circulation zones into one large gathering zone.

The splayed walls of the training facility guide visitors to reception, whilst creating a focused and enclosed gathering space within. The design strikes a balance between the need for security and discretion and the desire for openness and transparency.
